DESCRIPTION: Crypto-Voting is the innovative integrated electronic voting system based on Blockchain technology, funded by Sardegna Ricerche as part of POR FESR Sardegna 2014-2020. The project wishes to implement the breakthrough idea of Crypto-Voting through the use of two connected one-way pegged sidechain-style blockchains: one to register voters and register their votes and another for counting the votes allocated to the various candidates.

01. AN AVANT-GARDE ELECTRONIC VOTE SYSTEM

Crypto-Voting is the innovative integrated electronic voting system that Net Service S.p.A. is developing in collaboration with the  Department of Mathematics and IT (DMI) of the University of Cagliari.

The project, based on Blockchain technology, is funded by Sardegna Ricerche within the POR FESR Sardegna 2014-2020 project and offers significant advantages over other voting technologies.

O2. VOTE SECURITY AND INALTERABILITY

The secrecy of one’s vote is the main aspect, even if this constraint is lost when electronic voting is used for collecting signatures which, by their very nature, are not anonymous, but publicly accessible such as: referendums, popular initiative laws, presentation of electoral lists or individual candidates for the primary elections, or for the actual political elections.

The objective of the Crypto-Voting project is to study and develop a new electronic voting system integrated with one or more electoral event management procedures (system set-up, credential distribution, voting, ballot collection, preference counting, publication of the results, etc.), through the use of two linked Blockchains ( One-Way Pegged Sidechain type): one that registers the eligible voters and their voting, while the other counts the votes assigned to the various candidates (result).

03. FOR A MORE TRANSPARENT VOTING PROCESS

The system, previewed in Seville, within the IC3K 2018 (18-20 September) framework, will manage operationally three distinct phases of the process:

  • Preparatory activities and establishing electoral lists;
  • Voting management;
  • Counting the votes, thanks to the presence of two separate Blockchains even though linked together. The system aims to clearly separate phase 2 from phase 3, something which no other electronic voting system does, whereby voting implies automatically counting votes.
